Socioterritorial Fractures in China: The Unachievable "Harmonious Society"?

This article offers an inventory of the social and territorial fractures in Hu Jintao's China. It shows the unarguable but ambiguous emergence of a middle class, the successes and failures in the battle against poverty and the spectacular enrichment of a wealthy few. It asks whether the Confucian ideal of a "harmonious society," which the authorities have been promoting since the early 2000s, is compatible with a market economy. With an eye to the future, it outlines two possible scenarios on how socioterritorial fractures in China may evolve.

Les Villas Yosemite, miroir du capitalisme émergent ? Une gated community à l'américaine à Pékin

Depuis une quinzaine d'années, plusieurs centaines de gated communities ont été construites autour des principales métropoles chinoises. La plupart de ces micro-territoires de luxe fermés et sécurisés obéissent à un modèle socio-territorial largement standardisé. Dans les brochures publicitaires, la rhétorique commerciale est peu différenciée. Le cas des Villas Yosemite (Youshan meidi bieshu), gated community de style américain situé dans la périphérie de Pékin et étudié dans cet article, est singulier. Les documents publicitaires recueillis sur place en octobre 2003 sont d'une richesse exceptionnelle et leur signification va bien au-delà de l'argumentaire commercial. Il s'agit donc ici d'analyser les représentations contenues dans ce discours, et de se demander dans quelle mesure elles n'offrent pas des clés pour comprendre certains traits du capitalisme émergent en Chine et l'imaginaire de certaines de ses élites.

Yosemite Villas–Mirror of Emerging Capitalism? An American-style gated community in Beijing

Over the last fifteen years or so, several hundred gated communities have been built around China's major cities. Most of these tightly policed luxury enclaves follow a standard social model and physical layout. In the advertising brochures, the sales pitch shows little variation. Yosemite Villas (Youshan meidi bieshu), an American-style gated community on the outskirts of Beijing, is an exception. The publicity materials acquired there in October 2003, are unusually inventive and go well beyond the usual commercial appeal. This article will analyse the various representations contained in this discourse, and consider to what extent they might provide a key to understanding certain features of China's emergent capitalism, and the collective imagination of some of its elite.
